Episode 7 Mindy Weiss

In this captivating episode of "Weddings-ish with Jove," we are thrilled to welcome the incomparable and iconic event planner, Mindy Weiss, to the podcast! Jove fondly recalls his first encounter with Mindy at a conference they both attended, where they struck up a conversation at lunch that would spark a lasting connection. Mindy opens up about how many people often feel intimidated to approach her, yet she exudes kindness and humility contrary to the misconceptions that often precede her.

A California native with a deep-rooted love for Los Angeles, Mindy embodies a captivating blend of grace and down-to-earth charm. She reminisces about her college days at San Diego State University, where she pursued studies in communications for TV, radio, and film. As the social chair of her sorority, she playfully admits to being a self-proclaimed "party girl" who eventually realized the need to switch schools to ensure she could graduate.

Following college, Mindy pursued her ultimate dream of getting married and having a family. She married a man who specialized in produce and Mindy found herself taking up a part-time job at a stationary boutique, where fate intervened and her life's trajectory changed forever. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Janice, her dearest friend, and worked with clients like Kris Jenner for baby shower invitations.

Despite clients expressing interest in her event planning prowess, Mindy initially hesitated due to negative encounters with other event planners. However, a pivotal moment arose when she was convinced to plan a milestone 75th birthday celebration, igniting a passion within her that would shape her career for decades to come. Looking back, Mindy realizes the seed was planted when her parents would throw parties she vividly remembers growing up.

Her ascent to celebrity wedding planner status began with her first major client, Brooke Shields in her marriage to Andre Agassi marking the beginning of her reign over LA's elite wedding circuit. Mindy candidly shares the struggles she faced with budgeting, admitting to being a "people pleaser" who sometimes absorbed costs to ensure her vision was realized. She recently transitioned to charging a percentage, aligning with Jove's own approach, which mitigates resentment and ensures fair compensation.

“A lot of people ask me what drugs I am on because typically I am extremely calm.”

Mindy Weiss on her demeanor on event day

Mindy and Jove chat about the cyclical nature of trends in the wedding industry, with elements like round tables and chavari chairs making a resurgence today. They also discuss what gets her excited when it comes to designing events!

With a team of ten professionals by her side, Mindy navigates the complexities of wedding planning with finesse, emphasizing that they are responsible for the wedding day, not the marriage itself. She and Jove reflect on the creative process and what gets them excited when it comes to design. Mindy is always clear to her clients the importance of family, and the need to always be available to them as well as her clients.

As the conversation draws to a close, Mindy shares insights into her enduring partnership with the Kardashians, her aspirations for the future, and her commitment to sharing her expertise through books and masterclasses.
